Folding carton dieline template

A straight tuck end carton is the classic paperboard retail box: both tuck flaps close from the same side, so the front panel stays clean. It folds from one die-cut sheet with a glue flap down one side. Design straight onto the dieline and fold it in 3D.

Every design exports as a spec pack: layered dieline, 3D renders, spec sheet and prepress report, ready for any printer.

Add foil or spot gloss: see print finishes.

Several packaging formats designed in Packaroo

Standard sizes

Common starting points from Packaroo’s presets. You can also set your own dimensions in the editor. These are working sizes; confirm the exact spec with your supplier.

SizeBoardInside lengthInside widthInside height
Small350gsm60 mm40 mm100 mm
Medium350gsm90 mm60 mm140 mm
Large400gsm130 mm80 mm200 mm
Tall300gsm45 mm30 mm180 mm

Inside length is the wide front face, width is the depth, and height is how tall the carton stands. Most printers ask for 3 mm (1/8 in) bleed and a 3 to 5 mm safe margin. Always check your printer’s own spec before you send files.

How to read this dieline

Every Packaroo dieline uses the same four line types.

Cut line

The outside edge of the pack. Anything past this line is trimmed off.

Fold line

Where the board or film folds. Keep text and logos about 3 mm away so they do not land on a crease.

Bleed

Extend background colours and images to this line so no white edge shows if the cut shifts.

Safe area

Keep text, barcodes and logos inside this line, usually 3 to 5 mm inside the cut.

Before you design

Which tuck is which?

On a straight tuck end carton the top and bottom tuck flaps both hinge from the back panel, so they close from the same side. That keeps the flap edge off the front of the box. The dust flaps on the side panels fold in first, under the tucks.

Where the glue flap goes

The narrow glue flap on one edge is glued to the inside of the opposite panel when the carton is made. Nothing should print on it, because ink and coatings can stop the glue holding.

Which board?

Folding cartons use paperboard, not corrugated. In Packaroo you choose a board from 300 to 450 gsm; heavier board for bigger or heavier products. For more on styles and boards, see folding carton design.

Design it in 3D instead

In Packaroo you drop your artwork onto this dieline, see it as a 3D pack you can spin, check bleed and safe area, then export a spec pack your supplier can quote from. Start on the free plan, then export a spec pack for A$15, or subscribe if you export often.

Frequently asked questions

What is a folding carton dieline?

The flat layout of the carton showing where it is cut, folded and glued: front, back and side panels, the top and bottom tuck flaps, dust flaps and the glue flap, laid out as one sheet.

Can I change the dimensions?

Yes. Open the folding carton in Packaroo and type your own inside length, width and height; the dieline and 3D preview update as you go.

Can I add foil or spot gloss?

Yes. Give a layer a gold foil, silver foil or spot gloss finish; it shows in 3D and exports as its own plate. See print finishes.

Can I design on this template?

Yes. Open it in Packaroo, drop in your artwork and see it in 3D on the free plan. A spec pack export for your supplier is A$15.
